Pencil Drawing (Portrait)

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Hopefully this was the last time I’ll ever have to draw a self-portrait.  This was actually an assignment I had to do in one of my graphic design classes.  I used graphite pencils on everything except the facial hair and eyes, which were done with charcoal.  And since this was a class assignment, as well as self-portrait, I didn’t try to do a lot with the background.  I just needed something to fill up the extra space so I made “folds.”

This is a relatively small pencil drawing compared to the ones I usually do.  It is only about 6″x8″ and is very detailed for a drawing that size.  As always, the bigger the drawing, the more detail it can have.  And as far as the closeness of the resemblance, those who know me know that’s as close to my mug as it gets…

Realistically speaking, this image is eerie.  When I did this pencil drawing, I had it set in my mind that it should have a “withdrawn” feel to it in a place that could seem friendly under normal circumstances.  A lot of people are characteristically composed in this manner and I wanted to see if could find a way to express that.  For the most part, I think I did.

Disposable Volunteers

Believe it or not, this is a quick sketch that I only spent about 4-5 hours on.  While looking for random objects around the house to draw for a class project, I thought, why not kids toys?  There are plenty of them laying around!  So I got this little set-up going and this is the final outcome.  The only obstacle I ran into with this was defining the different colors using only black and white.  It took a little longer than anticipated but I eventually achieved the slight difference in shading needed to show some contrast.

Also, as crazy as it sounds, this drawing was done with a mechanical pencil—which is not at all normal.  The block that the display is organized on is the only part of the drawing that is done with charcoal.  I thought it would be neat to use the darkest color for the least important part of the display.  My reason behind doing so was to attempt to make the viewer have to look deeper into the drawing to find what’s most important, which is the complete opposite of typical formats.
